NeedToBreathe Trivia Question #2

October 28, 2009

Hi all,

The answer to the NeedToBreathe Trivia Question #1 is as follows:

(13 breaths/min)*(49.7 min/record) = 646.1 breaths/entire spin of the album, i.e. 647 breaths, rounding up to the nearest whole number.

Using "The Price Is Right" rules, the first person to guess closest without going over, the winner is Bethany with the first guess of 640!

Bethany - please email ntbstreetteam@yahoo.com to claim your prize!

Ok, get your thinking caps cranked up for this one.

Question #2: How many Hurricanes have occurred since 1900?

Remember, the more evidence you site, the more likely we are to believe your answer!

Good luck.

I came up with 1126 total using a few sites including Stormpulse, National Weather Service, MSN encarta...that was a lot of counting!

According to MSN Encarta by way of Ask jeeves they say there have 123 major storms since 1900 and 46 of those were titled as hurricanes. So my guess would 46!

Using a very high intellectual process(random configuration), I came up with 1,096 named and unamed hurricanes; not including tropical storms, depressions or low pressure areas. And since the N2B Webcrew is using the "Price is Right" rules, if someone guesses exactly the right number does that person get an extra 500 dollars?

Very timely question seeing as I just saw you guys in concert at the Blue Gill near Mobile AL, which was destroyed by Katrina in 2005, I live 4 miles from there; but of course they built it back. I have researched this using Stormpulse.com where they show the storms for each year and the tracking of each storm and when they became hurricanes. I tallied 577 Atlantic Basin Hurricanes and 444 Pacific Basin Hurricanes for a total of 1,021 Hurricanes since 1900. (There was no data available prior to 1949 for Pacific Basin Hurricanes). Need To Breathe = Awesome!!!

This was quite a fun research project... and after mining data from the "Tropical Prediction Center" i have found that there have been exactly 584 hurricanes since 1900. The greatest number of storms in any 1 year came with 15 in 2005 and only two years since 1900 have there been no recorded hurricanes: 1907 and 1914.

ps great show Tuesday! Absolutely loved it! What a unique and intimate way to end a show... we left the show and debated driving to Minneapolis... but then we got snowed in... Come back soon!

Well....from 1900 - 2000, there were 165 hurricanes that hit the mainland US. 65 of them were "major" (category 3 or higher). Since then, there have been a LOT (including Katrina). There was also that boxer nicknamed Hurricane, and then there was that song titled Hurricane - with an accompanying video.....so final answer is 183. Yep. That should do it! :)
